This school year I am beginning a new role in my school district as the K-12 District Diversity Chair. Not Light, But Fire is the selected reading material for our middle and high school teachers who serve as their school’s diversity liaisons.
I am only about a fourth of the way through and have to force myself not to highlight every other line, and I have found that much of the content and application can be used in lower grades as well. Kay specifically hones in on the importance of actually creating a space where students feel safe, not just simply saying “this is a safe space”.
I am looking forward to giving you all a full review when I am finished!
